Best Shot of the Week

Hole #2: S-worded my tee ball 180 yards down the hill of the fairway for #1. A wall of trees separated me from the fairway I was supposed to be on. Only choice was to get lucky with a low punch to get back into a decent position, but punch shot got held up in the trees, and dropped onto some hardpan about 225 yards from the pin. Pulled 3-wood and hit it just about as good I could possibly hit it, straight with just a couple yards of fade.

Flew the green and ended up 30 yards over the green in some rough. Rest of the hole was routine, pitched on and 2-putted for double bogey.

Last week I pulled my tee shot into a tree leaving me 218 to the pin.  The rough was thick, and there was a giant laurel in my way.  I yelled at one of the guys that I was going to have to open the face of my 19 degree hybrid to bend it over the tree.  Somehow it worked exactly as I drew it up, and it stopped 10 feet from the pin.

Only played once this week...my best shot was this drive on #16:

image.png

I aimed right over the bunkers...and hit it perfectly, with a little draw (!)...261 slightly uphill, and it had to carry at least 230 to get there clean.  I've been working on shallowing my swing lately so when I hit a shot like that with the driver it gives me some good vibes.

I hit a driver 322 yards on the 4th hole today. 302 on the tenth. 307 on the 14th. And 291 into a little wind on the 17th.

For those of us who hit every shot perfectly there is that one "shot that keeps us coming back". We talk about it with out buddies when it happens. We hate the crummy shots. So - what was the last "one that will keep you coming back" shot? I had one late yesterday out playing "hit-and-giggle" while keeping myself alive with cold IPA. It was one of those where you're paired with a guy who doesn't know you but thinks you must be a ringer...until a few more holes go buy, anyway. What was yours? I expect this thread to have a long life as people report in...

6 iron from 192, into the breeze (elevation so not as impressive as it sounds). Hit a perfect shot with a beautiful 5 yard draw to about 7 feet. That might have been the best shot I’ve ever hit.

First...what was your shot? I mean...come on. Second..we do have a ‘shot of the week’ thread so this is pretty similar yes? That being said I recently hit my second shot on a par five poorly leaving me on a steep bank to a pond. Aside from having to check for gators the ball was about 3’ below my feet in deep grass. I had 123yds to a pin with a huge bunker guarding the front. I nailed my gap wedge to about 3’ to make birdie when I was already assuming bogey.

4i yesterday. Probably the most pure I’ve hit an iron ever.

2nd shot on #7: a perfect 4-wood out of light rough, with a slight draw to it...setting up a relatively easy par.  I've been struggling lately with my fairway wood and hybrid, so it felt especially good.

A short par 3, had 112 to a front pin, made my 110 yd swing with my 54 degree and couldn't have hit it any more pure. Never left the flagstick, ball landed about 2 feet short of the hole, bounced up and hit the flagstick, coming to rest about 6-7 feet away from the hole.

There was a twosome waiting to tee off on the next tee box which was only 20-30 yds away from the green and they clapped and yelled back "nice shot"

It is nice to have several candidates this week.  Sometimes it is hard to find anything particularly noteworthy.

I had played a mediocre first nine (43) and promptly bogeyed the 10th hole.  A nice drive on #11 was in the middle of the fairway but in a divot hole (begin discussion about relief from fairway divot holes ... ha ha ha!).  I planned on hitting an 8 iron to the middle of the green, avoiding going at the hole location tucked behind a bunker on the right.  I hit the shot crisply and exactly as I had planned.  Ultimately, that 8 iron led to a 20 foot birdie followed by a -2 back nine of 34. Turned out the careless player who left that unrepaired divot hole did me a favor.

This is the par 5 10Th at Southwinds in West Boca Raton.

My tee shot faded a good bit and ended up in jail.  I had to consider punching out backwards.  In the end I decided to go for it.  I hooded the 3-wood and had to find a way to fade it lots, ball toward the back foot.  I did not have command of this shot.

The sucker shot just under the big tree and curled along the fairway ending on the back fringe.  I three-putted.  😐 Nobody even saw the shot.6DED4F07-E083-429C-92C8-5B96BA9E4A15.thumb.png.b562cd8ce39c2aeb8aaa3873e12cc6ba.png

Hole #15, 300-yard par-4:

The green is reachable for me with a slight downslope in the 250-270 yard driver landing area. Right foot slipped out during downswing and I topped the ball into red staked penalty area on the right. Took my penalty stroke and dropped in the designated drop circle about 220 out. Took out my 3-hybrid and my right foot slipped again, this time hitting a thin hook down the left that bounced off a tree and ended up in the rough about 90 yards from pin. Terrible distance for me because I'm sketchy with partial wedges. Hit a 3/4 55-degree wedge, one hop and stops about 1 foot from the pin. Tapped in for bogey.

Today was the day that I wished my game was every day (at least the front nine).   It was my first time playing Beacon Hill Golf Club in Commerce Twp.  I had 3 birdie putts today all on the front 9.  The first was on the first hole about 21 ft, the second on #4 at 25 ft and the third at #5 at 21 ft.

The way I've been putting it ain't a birdie putt unless it's inside of 5 feet.

I had a 6 iron tee shot on a par 3 to win a sleeve of balls. It was a charity contest for COVID victims.

But the best shot was after a bad driver that left me 190 yard out with trees in the way. I launched my 3H between two pines and a large maple to three feet off the green in light rough. I pitched to 2 feet and made par.

That’s pretty remarkable.  I really have no idea what your game is like despite our frequent discussions - they’re all about me.  Is it typical for you to hit such tremendous drives?  Do you have control of them like you want to?

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
