If seems as though the weather will calm and the scores will start going lower. A great chance for a bold move as it should be mild by the time all of the leaders tee off. I look for Spieth but cheer for them all.  Has Fowler actually got a major in him? Can Couples give us thrills.  Good days ahead boys and girls

I hate to say it, and no doubt most here will hate me for it, but the tricked-up crazy golf style greens at Augusta are ridiculous.

Uhhhhh, yeah, you're not going to find many who agree. They're the primary defense and what makes the course such a second-shot course. And so challenging.

I buy into most of the Augusta mystique, but the naming of the different holes after trees/flowers is soooooo pretentious...

I disagree. It's a nice touch. Lots of courses do it.

I was wondering about this. Do you think he does it because hes throwing it past the hole and he doesn't want it to hit high on the stick and spin off the green like Rory did earlier?

Yes, that's why. Which is a fine reason.

That said, am I the only one who thought you couldn't have the flag tended when you're off the green??

You can have the flag tended whenever you want. Or held above the hole in the air, too, if you can't see where it is.

Yeah...I think Erik's right on...can't imagine why you think that? That's what makes this tournament so awesome among many other things. I quoted wrong...sorry.

What a mouth watering prospect of a weekend we have with that leaderboard. Phil and Spieth and Rory too are right there, but I really hope Sergio can hold it together. If anyone could ever 'deserve' a major it's him.

I audibly gasped when Pieters said that "this is just another golf course".

I bet the stuffed shirts at Augusta almost stroked out!!

The irreverent attitude is working for him so far. It's probably a good thing for a first-timer not to be caught up in all the history and tradition, and focus on the task at hand instead.

Possibly the language barrier having something to do with it - we all know what he was trying to say (basically, not getting overwhelmed by the occasion).

That mentality may work. Even when he dropped back to Even on Thursday after getting to 5-under, I had a feeling he'd climb back in it. Similar guy to DJ. Big, tall, lanky and strong and can really take advantage of the par-5s. He's a unique talent.

He's just having a tough start to his day. He isn't as collected as some, sure. But his being upset is understandable.

I think that a lot of new courses get gimmicky with their green undulations and I feel this way about them. That simply isn't the case at Augusta for several reasons:

1. Undulations are part of this course from tee to green and naturally fit the topography of the property. If you ever go to the tournament, I think you will leave thinking that the greens organically fit the nature of the course and the property.

2. As @iacas said, the greens are the main defense of the course and make it the great second shot course that it is.

3. The greens are not just hilly for the sake of being hilly like you see out of a lot of newer courses. They serve the purpose of making tiny targets out of large greens.

Just imagine the spotlight Jordan Spieth would be in right now if he could trade his last two quadruple bogeys at Augusta for pars.

Love Monty's comment when speaking about Adam Scott......"And he has maybe the best caddie (pause), if you ask the caddie."

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
