Bags: Cart vs. Stand vs. Staff

Looking for new bag. Like the staff bags but I'm no pro. Like the cart bags but occasionally walk. Is the a best of both worlds here? And don't say pull carts. ?

I actually used the Callaway Mini Staff bag (9” top) and loved it. Why? Well despite what some report, my clubs (midsize grips) get all bunched up in stand bags. It’s annoying to me. With the staff bags this simply isn’t going to happen. I liked the open layout with just 3 large sections for my clubs. Zero binding.

Upside?: Plenty of room and no club binding.

Down side? You’ll hear “Shooter McGavern” comments endlessly.

You could get a cart bag and a golf trolley, best of both worlds.

I use a staff bag, and a push trolley. Been using this type of rig for 25 + years. The extra room in the larger bag comes in handy on hot/cold days. My clic gear trolley is effortless. Staff bag fits in a riding cart as needed.

What do you have against a trolley?

Don't buy a staff bag unless you're pretty good. Cart bags have no legs which means they kind of suck to carry around unless you don't mind laying them down on the ground. Carry bags don't have as much room and compartments as cart bags and some of the pockets aren't in the best places when strapped to a cart, but they're lighter when carried.

You can get a hybrid bag, which is basically a cart bag with legs. Mine has one less outerwear pocket than the standard cart version, which is both a merit and a flaw depending on the circumstance, but at least I can bring it to the range without it falling or laying it on the ground.

Push Carts ?

I own one and it got me back to walking the course. I can walk 18 holes with out a problem. 

If you do not like a push cart, and want to walk, then the stand bag is the only option for you. I wouldn't carry a cart bag.

No best of both worlds 

Sun Mountain 2.5+ to carry on your back

Sun Mountain 4.5 as a range/cart bag - has velcro strap to keep legs on bag.

Because I value my back, I prefer to use a push cart and try not to ride, unless forced to do so.

How much stuff do you really need in your bag? I have a stand bag and have 2+ sleeves of balls, rain gear, club wrench, sunscreen, ample tees, bag cover, and tons of other little things.

There are some fairly spacious stand bags if you walk occasionally but mainly ride.  Since I walk a lot, I use an extremely light and compact bag that does not do the work of a decent cart or staff bag as far as club separation and storage.

I vote for the lightest stand bag you can find that'll fit everything you carry. Even if you push your bag you'll notice the difference in weight

I've used them all (and still have several of each) I always seem to go back to carry bags with a stand. All those pockets in staff bags and cart bags are nice, but I don't have enough stuff to fill them. All that happens is I end up not being able to find anything because I can never remember which of the 50 pockets I put it in.

All I ever need to carry is a few balls, some tees, an extra glove or two, my rain gear, a club wrench, and my personal items (phone, wallet, etc) All that stuff fits just fine into my Oakley stand bag and even then I have a couple of empty pockets. 

Stand bags fit in carts just fine, they do well in push carts as well, and they don't break your back when you carry them from your car to the course.

I use a stand bag on my clicgear push cart. Sometime there are courses you are not allowed to use the cart, on them i can easily walk with it.

I've used the same Sun Mountain Three 5 bag for the last 7 years now and I can definitely recommend it. It's certainly been durable, since my only issue in that entire time is last summer the rubber carry handle started to disintegrate so I don't use it anymore (leaves black all over my hands if I do). I could get it fixed for free by sending it in to Sun Mountain, but it's not a big deal to me really. 

It's light enough to carry with no problems, but big enough to fit whatever you need. I usually carry with it my rain jacket (inside the large pocket), an umbrella (on the side in the umbrella loops), about half a dozen golf balls, three or four gloves, a copy of the rules, some jerky or other snacks, athletic tape, tees and ball marks and pitch repair tools (in a little pouch), yardage books, sharpies, various medications I need to have with me, and whatever other miscellaneous junk I've collected along the way. I don't generally pack that light, but I always have what I need if I need or want it (and I'm young for now, so it'll only do me good to carry around a little more weight so long as its not attached to my belly).

Go for the Staff bag.  They are awesome!

I have 2... a Wilson and a Ping.  Can fit everything in there.  Umbrella, T shirts, windbreaker, rain coat, 100's of balls & tees, rang finder, yardage book, divot tools, club towels, ball markers, meds, ointments, drinks and snacks.

You won't want to carry it for 18 holes but they are pretty sweet!

I also have 2 stand bags that I use when it look like it might rain.  They hold most of the above but have the rain hoods and they are not leather so no biggie if they get wet.

Maybe get both if you have the $$$ so you get the best of all worlds.
