Would You Rather...? #26: Shoot the lowest score of your life on a completely forgettable course or one of the worst scores of your life on any course of your choice?

I'm pretty sure I'd rather shoot 61 on a forgettable course… because I'm pretty sure I'd remember the 61 and thus the course. 🙂

I've never been one to care too much about playing "the course of my choice" - the big-name courses. It's cool, and I'll go out of my way to play them, and I enjoy doing so… but to a point.

This is the easiest one yet for me. Breaking it down by math here. If x is the lowest score and y is the highest I would ever shoot, I would much rather have y plus or minus 3 on an amazing course than x-1 on a junk course (boring, forgettable, whatever). In situation A, my lowest lifetime score goes down by 1 stroke. Situation B means that I get to take LOADS (and I mean loads cause I've had some pretty junk scores) of shots on St. Andrews or Augusta. Situation B is a clear winner here for me.

I'll gladly take the lowest score of my life.    I can have great life experiences away from a golf course.    When I'm on a golf course, my ultimate golf is to score low.

A.  I’d rather shoot 99 at Augusta, than 69 at some dog track.

I’ll still hold out hope for that elusive 69 at some point, so for me, the opportunity to play a course that’s otherwise completely out of the realm of possibility trumps the guarantee to do something I might still do otherwise.

I'd take the lowest score of my life, on a forgettable course. That would mean that I finally broke par. That, and really, really low scores are hard to play to, for anyone.

Hmm...when you say on a “completely forgettable” course, was that meant to be on a course that was in poor condition or just one that’s not really famous? Either way, I’ve got a course in mind for both of those, so I’ll take the first option. I’d love to break 80.

I'm taking the low score. I've documented my golf history in other threads but when I first started playing I was terrible. I had to work really hard to reach mediocre. So, to shoot one of the worst scores of my life, that could literally be in the upper 120's. The lowest score of my life would be a 75.

At this stage in my golf life shooting something near 130 would probably make me give up the game... even if it was on the course of my choice.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I don't care if the course is a goat track, the scenes of my better rounds hold a special place in my heart. One of my personal favorites is the course I broke 100 at for the first time. I really missed not going to Outer Banks this year and not getting to play that course was a part of that.

Conversely, some of the most interesting courses I've ever played have seen score cards meet trash cans before the turn. Don't get me wrong. I can appreciate these places for what they are, but mainly it is a reminder just how much I suck.

I may be the only one to answer this way, but I would rather shoot a bad score on an awesome course. My favorite rounds were getting my arse kicked by Oakland Hills.

Right now the lowest score of my life would be a 79. While it would be cool to break 80, I don’t think it’s a particularly memorable achievement. I’m hoping I’ll do it at some point this year anyway.

I’d like to play Pine Valley, even I end up scoring 120.

Lowest score.  The problem for me with the other choice is I would not have much fun playing ANGC or Pine Valley while shooting 120.  Whereas, shooting 69 at Podunk GC would be very fun.

My highest score ever was a 114 when I was 13 and in my second year of golf and playing my first regulation course.  Sure, I'll take that score at Cypress Point Golf Course.  I want Clint Eastwood in my foursome so I can argue politics with him.  And discuss the fine art of film directing.

Anyway, I want to agree with David in FL. Quite a few years ago I won a contest at work to play a round of golf on the Monterey Peninsula during our annual trip to California for the Monterey Wine Festival. My boss thought he could call Pebble a month in advance and get a tee time! Once he was disabused of that notion, we wound up playing Spyglass Hill.

The Monterey Wine Festival was held in February, so it had been a while since I'd swung a club. I shot a 92 and was overjoyed!

I've spent several days pondering this.  I have not played enough courses to where any are truly "forgettable" as each one is an adventure.  A key to this is the second half of this question "..or one of the worst scores...".  Given that caveat, I truly would like to play a course like St Andrews, Pebble, or Augusta National one day.  In my motorcycling days the mantra was "its not the destination but the ride" therefore I would choose the latter as it would be the adventure of a lifetime, maybe a "bucket list" item.  Lowest score of my life, I would hate to think that I would "never" play that well again. I would like to have that dream still on the table, even when the day comes that I'm shooting from the most forward tees as an old, old golfer.

Would You Rather...? #27: Assume you're told you're going to shoot a net even par round and play to your handicap. Assume you're also told you're going to shank three balls. Would you rather: a) shank them on the first three holes, b) shank them on the last three holes, or c) shank them randomly throughout the round?

Why?

I would much rather shank them on the first three holes. Even though I’d know before the round that I’d shoot a net even par, those shanks are likely to result in poor scores, and I’d rather have a poor start than a poor finish.
