Hank Haney:

“You couldn’t coach Tiger and have a friendlier scenario than Chris Como has. Look at the record Tiger had with Butch [Harmon]; I was following that. Look at the record Tiger had with me; Sean [Foley] was following that. Let’s face it: The expectations are not super high at this point.”

I wonder why he felt the need to say that? Maybe he felt that he was giving Como some cover by lowering expectations, but it feels like the opposite to me.

4 and 5. I'd imagine with Tiger a lot more 4 than 5.

Sometimes 3 (particularly if they over-do it and have too much shaft lean, i.e. it lines up too late), sometimes even 1 and 2. Those times are pretty rare.

IF this causes a 5SK pop I think it will happen when Tiger makes the transition from talking about traj to talking about the 4th key and avoiding getting stuck.

I'm rooting for that to happen.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

These days, Hank Haney's only access to the spotlight is by commenting on the "State of Tiger." The more professional approach would have been to compliment Como, wish Tiger luck and leave it at that. But that's never been Haney's M.O.

And I'm not even sure I agree with his opinion. Sure, Haney had all world expectations, but he also had access to Tiger at his physical prime. Como is dealing with a "late 30's" Tiger whose body has been ravaged by injuries and multiple surgeries. And even with all of those limitations, most people still have the expectation that when Tiger returns to competition, he is going to compete for major titles with regularity. Expectations not super high? I'm not so sure about that Hank....

Heh.

Tiger in a press conference… “Yeah, my Key 4 needs a little work… when it gets off 5 goes and I can hit it anywhere, but when 4 is good 5 is good too.”

Don't know. Maybe not… he isn't an instructor. He only has to worry about his feels. :)

Its cool to see that Tiger moved on from Foley already (not that I have a problem with Foley) and is heading in a new direction. Im glad he didn't mess around on his own for a year or so.  Not that he necessarily needed a coach but it would just be a question he would have to answer until he came up with someone new. I hope these guys have a successful relationship and it leads to a few more majors.  I think its cool that the guy has something to do with 5SK.

What I wonder, would you say that Tiger really has a  sense of a golfswing. Does he know? Could he be a teacher? I once read a story about a Major tour winnar who really didn't had a clue about positions etc. He just hit the ball.

I am fairly certain that tiger does know but cannot feel when his swing is off a fraction. Players these days can't just be good enough.

i think he can feel it.  when he gets in those funks he looks like hes fighting his swing/steering it.  you see him trying to steer it with that high right shoulder finish he gets sometimes.  he just doesnt always know how to fix it.

Brandel should check out more than just the putting threads on this site ;-)

Quote:

What one will learn in studying the biomechanics of great ball-strikers is that there must be a lateral shift off of the ball in the backswing and a corresponding lateral shift into the ball on the downswing. This is imperative and very much what Tiger was doing until 2010.

Staying centered or hanging left at address causes the club to want to go inside abruptly off of the ball and it takes great effort to avoid it. Hanging left robs a player of width in the backswing and flow and rhythm in the downswing. With Woods’ phenomenal hip rotation speed, hanging left caused him to get stuck - coming too much on an inside path - on the downswing and hence his sometimes overexaggerated over-the-top move to counter this tendency. With the driver, more often than not his clubhead path was way out to the right with excessive forward shaft lean, and to offset this his spine tilted away from the target to the point of pain.

If Como understands the way the bodies of the best players of all time moved and applies those principles to Woods, then his pupil has a very good chance of playing uninjured for the rest of his career and a very good chance of achieving his career goals.

I wonder where Brandel is getting this information with the lateral shift comments. There is certainly a pressure shift but the majority of pros aren't moving their heads side to side very much.

I agree that Tiger, or any player really, shouldn't be "hanging" left.

Brandel targets his comments towards the average uninformed golfer who goes "ooh" and "ahh" when they read or hear his attempts to sound educated about the golf swing.

He could be talking about a lateral shift of center of mass, not the head. In order to transfer your weight forwards your center of mass well also move forward, even if your head does not.

Maybe he means COP but then he also talks about the head moving in the Facebook post. Also if he did know about biomechanics he would know that Tiger would have had a rightward "shift" with his Foley back swing.

BTW I'm hoping Brandel gets this stuff right.

I know that I definitely started playing better once I stopped trying to eliminate any semblance of a shift off of the ball. SnT had me so concerned about that that I started doing some pretty goofy backswings to try to meet their criteria, to be fair, I was self teaching SnT.

I have no idea what my "numbers" are but I do know that I have a "sensation" of moving off the ball in the backswing that corresponds nicely with Shampoo's 2 inches prescription. Whether or not that particular "feel" is "real" is something I don't care to examine, I have enough "things" to fix without trying to fix what ain't broke...
