I play something catchy on repeat from the mobile device while practicing. Complete silence at times can be a little stark.

I've always had the ability to have music playing in my head. I used that technique a lot when I used to train for cycling races. Really long rides can get dull and headphones are a no-no on a bike.

I can do it now while playing golf.

When this happens to me it's always some song that I can't stand or some commercial jingle.

Ear worm. That is a risk for this technique!

You are an auditory eidetic!

Ha ha, I do the same if I'm not listening to music on the course. I'll usually play a song I listened to on the drive to the course over and over again throughout my round. I'll sometimes get superstitious if I hit a good shot during a certain part of the song in my head and then I'll try to line up that part of the song again with my next shot.

but then I've seen people lose it about all sorts of minor distractions that I wouldn't even notice (normally after a poor drive ;))

I see this all the time.  I have one guy I play with that every time he hits a bad shot, he complains about something with noise.  He once complained about the guys cleaning up the leaves with blowers after he chunked a chip.  I didn't even hear the noise until he mentioned it.  So later on in the round, one of the other guys goes to him, hey you want me to call the County Police to have them stop traffic on the road so you can tee off.  Almost fell on the ground it was so funny.

Probably not the greatest idea. Not that it would bother me. But I know enough guys that get rattled by a gopher farting to know it would cause problems on the course.

I listen to music on a small bluetooth speaker when I am playing alone on an empty course. I turn it down / off when I encounter other groups. Some of my favorite rounds have been played this way. If no one is behind me I even take my time and play four hour rounds! :-P

If my buddies during a fun round are cool with it then we'll put on some tunes but at a low enough volume that it's not annoying.  When I'm out walking a solo round I typically have my iPhone going with Pandora.

I like listening to some tunes while I play but my regular group  doesn't so neither do I. As far as other groups listening, I don't care as long as you're not being rude about it.

Last weekend my buddy and I got paired with two younger guys who were listening to music, I didn't care because they were cool about it and I hardly heard it. Contrast that with the slow group ahead of us who had their music so loud, you could hear it if you got within 30 yards of them. Plus their taste in music sucked so that made it even worse lol.

So I know this is my first summer back to golf after a 15 year layoff, and I hope this doesn't put me in the grumpy "get off my lawn" old guy camp....  BUT what the heck?

Living on a course and on one of the greens, I am constantly amazed how many golf carts pull up with music blasting from the cart.  It is especially annoying on days like today when you are outside in your yard or deck or even in the house with the windows open.

They are using the course carts, so I am assuming they are bringing their own speakers with them.  Is this a common thing these days?

We've had a decent amount of threads about this before, but short answer: yes, unfortunately.

I play music when I'm alone ...or I'll ask if a playing partner cares to hear any...but it's just through my phone and certainly not loud enough to hear if one is any distance from the cart.

    • Congrats! Day 551, May 6, 2024 Played 18 holes with @DrizZzY hitting irons only and playing the white tees. No really "bad" shots, and a few really, really good ones. Finished on nine (they send us off 10 in May) with… a 197-yard 5I uphill and an 84-yard sand wedge to three feet.
    • Ahh the old classic "nobody agrees with me so I don't want to talk about it anymore"
    • @anaveragehacker, you’ve been ignorant this whole time and now you’re being disrespectful. Not a great combo. You asked what the rules were and we told you. You complained about them and we told you why they were the way they are. The “who is the committee?” Question has been answered a few times. Dave and I are Rules Officials and the other people replying know the rules far better than you, so the fact that we are all disagreeing with you should say something. this thread is going nowhere and your original question has been answered several times.
    • What is this committee I keep hearing about? We’re a small league playing at a county course. And these are temporary issues that may be gone in a day or two. In any case, I wish more people agreed with me. It seems that trying to convince golfers to modernize rules is like trying to change the Bible. You guys are so serious it kind of proves my point. Other sports make adjustments for  field conditions etc during lower level play. This isn’t life and death here, it’s sport. No need to keep arguing. I have my opinion and you have yours.
    • Yeah, I agree that some of the charts are hard to make sense of. That short game chart is showing how often a short game shot ends up within a certain distance. The orange bar is all shots, the green bar is for shots within 25 yards, and the blue bar is for shots between 25 and 50 yards. I just play around with all of it and will figure it out. I would suggest just diving in and see what jumps out and work on that.
