It depends, for me. But I can play down to about 40F I think. It would have to be sunny and little wind. I'd have to be walking. I can have just a little layer in that (thin sweatshirt) and be mostly fine so long as I'm moving, and keeping my hands warm between shots.

The course has to be pretty wide open though. I don't want to wait on slow pokes when it's that cold.

The courses are a mess out here now. Squishy. It'll be like this until April. Some people do play, but if you take a divot, you take a clod. I'm done. It's range work maybe on a warmer day once a month until then. I'll be in the gym. I can't stand it under 55.

Yeah, the courses are squishy now, you just have to wait until they are frozen solid! Then you'll get your bounce and run out back! Of course I don't know if such a circumstance occurs in Washington other than at high altitude.

I've been sleeted on, snowed on, hailed on, and rained on. I've been as cold as I could be and also felt like I'd been baked in an oven! Both extremes are unpleasant, yet we seem to forget the hot times.

There are courses here who will be open for play year round weather permitting. I've played at Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, January, February, March, whenever!

There's another thread somewhere on this site about taking a break from golf from time to time. I thoroughly recommend that! Most of the "off season" rounds cited above happened after a significant hiatus from the game. I usually played quite well, which added to the enjoyment.

I'll play providing its not snowing or torrential rain or gale force winds (pretty much like it has been recently). I dont mind layering up or wearing winter golf gloves. Course i play is up on the moors so the soil has good drainage and we raley have winter greens.

Winter golf is great, less people out playing means i dont feel rushed.

Don't play in the rain, and wind speed over 30mph. Temperature doesn't bother me

After spending all of Saturday inside, it was weather be damned yesterday. I played with 36-degree temps, cloudy and wind between 15-25 mph. It was borderline, but I'm glad I went. The key was that I was all alone on the course. Waiting would have been intolerable.

If the course is open, I will play!  I have worked outside all winter so I have some good, warm stuff to wear.  I have played in Dec and Jan up here in NE.  The biggest issue is waiting for the frost.  Usually a 10 - 11 shotgun is what you can get when it is really cold.  Only the Die Hards go out then... I guess I am one of them.  Have brought a hammer and a 16 penny spike out to help put the tee in the ground.  You should see the looks we get!

I'll bet you get some great hops & rolls in the fairway off the tee!

Yea I have see a few 5 irons go as far as a 3w would in the summer.  Have see a few greens that were in the shade and didn't melt all the frost off.  You come in with a W or 9i and it bounces 20' high like you just hit concrete.  On those days its just getting out of the house and having some fun... a little brandy and nothing bothers me!

If it's around 40 and sunny I'm in, if it's around 40, partly sunny and windy, or rain, I'm out.

Last year I played on Christmas and New Years Day.

As far as cold goes, if its sunny with no wind, ill play in below freezing temps if the course allows play. I walk every time i play, so that keeps you warm.  The cold+wind is what gets me, not so much the cold itself.

Same, windchill factor makes it unpleasant for me, especially as im prone to migraines if i get too cold, a crisp calm day though is fine, its the rain thats ruining it for me at the minute

*Sigh* very depressing to think about this one..

It's not the temp for me, it's the ground. There has been so much rain the carts are getting stuck... Balls are plugging on the practice greens from short pitch shots. Just no point destroying my cleats in this slop. I tried to do it last year and spent half of my time looking for or cleaning golf balls. Absolutely miserable.

For golfers in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington, the La Nina effect is bad news.

My retired buddies have all about hung it up for the year and the weather is turning bad. Cold and windy or rain. I may have played my last round last Friday. But it was the beautiful day, so I have that memory. I will sneak out if I can in the next couple of weeks if the courses stay open.

I'll play on those occasional winter days when the temps go above 40, no snow and no wind. I've played when the flags were frozen in the cups and couldn't be removed. A pint of scotch helps a lot. Worst conditions are in the late Fall on a windy day - leaves blowing all over the fairway, even when the course tries to blow them off. Hit it and hope you find it.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
