I don't go to a local course as a single.  I'm sure not going any distance as one.

if it were me and my buddies, making a day out of a mid-winter "gotta get away and play" kind of thing, I'd probably give it the full day.  Call it 3 hours each way and break it up with a nice steak dinner somewhere on the way home.

I knew it was going be tough to get my question across but let me try to clarify. If you need to use the word 'we' for the trip it is excluded. It is yourself ONLY driving in a car X.X amount of hours, playing 1 single round of golf at an every day course (Bethpage, Pebble Beach and the like excluded) and then driving back home (maybe stopping for a bite to eat on the way home/there). Going to an event, like the TST outing, is also excluded as you are meeting up with people you know (even if it is people you only 'know' through the internet).

At that rate, it's one hour each way. Middle of last winter we had an odd warm day but the ground up here was still frozen. Packed it up and played Avon Fields in Cincinnati.

In the scenario you describe, no more than 10 minutes each way.

These days, I only play as a single at a local course when I can keep the time commitment to a minimum and it doesn't interrupt family obligations. Usually, that means 9 holes at a nearby muni after leaving work early. In order for me to commit a full day to golf/driving, I would need to be playing a round with close friends and/or family.

Depends on time of year.

Winter I would travel 1.5 hours both ways.

Summer, 30 minutes.

Wow, most everyone drives longer than I would.... well, these days I usually always play as a single. My home course is about 30 minutes away and that is about as far as I would go. I have a REALLY nice course about 5 minutes away from my house that was designed by Greg Norman (very challenging). I played it once and it kicked my butt. The strangest part I remember was a large tree came crashing down in the woods directly next to me (that was scary) and it was a quiet (not windy) morning. That was one time I was playing with a friend.

i really want to play Bethpage some day and thats 3.5 hrs by car.  so i would do 7 hrs round trip.

crap, i mis-read that.  by myself?  playing as a single when i got there?  jeez...IDK...maybe an hour away? 2 hrs round trip?

I'm half an hour away from Bethpage and have never bothered haha. But then again I'm more worried about sucking and having my butt handed to me than the actual drive over there.

1 hr would be pushing the limit for me mostly because there is probably about 40 courses open to the public within an hour of where I live.

I broke that rule and traveled about 1.5 hours to play on a TST get together.

I am trying to determine how long of a drive I am willing to suffer this winter to get in a single round and wonder what others would set the limit at. So what would you set the limit at for 1 round of golf as a single player without any other plans/meet-ups included in the trip? The only purpose of the trip being 1 round of golf for yourself only. I think my limit is approximately 2 hours one way or 4 hours total.

I wouldn't go more than 40 minutes each way. I have the choice of a fair few courses within that radius though.

I wouldn't. Only once have I driven more than 45 minutes or so to golf and I wasn't by myself. I like golf but it's not that important so I can wait for the weather to get better. Last played before Thanksgiving and haven't missed it. I play enough in season, posted 80 plus rounds in 2015 and I was at the course more than just that lot's of range time and partial rounds I didn't return.

I might possibly use the 2 hour one way limit you set, certainly not any longer.  The problem for me is 2 hours gets me into central Ohio and their weather & current course conditions are no better than where I am.

When I lived in Summit County, CO. day trips to the front range were the norm to play.

We also would go to Grand Junction on occasions, 6 hr round trip.

I have made a few 8 hr round trips, that's my extreme of a day trip to play. Four guys on a road trip with lot's of beer.

Right now the longest trip for a single round of golf was to Norwalk, OH for this summer's TST event. That's about 300-miles round trip. Lots of fun, good company and I got a backpack out of it.

You drove up there and then they made you play as a single; kind of a sad story.

This depends who I'm playing with.

Like @Golfingdad, I've made the trip to Palm Springs just for golf -- although most of my "just golf" trips were two days (usually when rates were cheaper).  Now that I have family living there, though, I don't go out there "just for golf."  Prior to having family there, I had made the trip just for the golf.

I think my personal farthest was just north of San Diego from Los Angeles.  One round of golf, turned around and came back.

But back to who I'm playing with -- if there were a TST meetup in Phoenix, I can see driving out there for an extended weekend (it's six hours, give or take) if I could make the time work, and that has golf as the main reason for going.  But I wouldn't drive out, play, and drive back the same day.

In January? 20 degrees below freezing? Snow up to my nuts?

I'd be willing to drive pretty far!

It didn't say in the OP, but I think you mean in 1 day right. I have driven 6+ hours but stayed a night or two. In a day the longest I have driven is 3 hours one way.

    • Its simple, YOU are responsible for reporting YOUR score correctly, at every level of golf.  Do you imagine a top pro would really trust anyone else with his score? Without getting too far from the original post, the Rules have been revised every 4 years for decades.  They're continually evaluated, and most changes are in response to changes within the game.  BTW, if wind blows your ball off the green before you've lifted and replaced it, you play from wherever it ends up.  The TV call ins weren't a rule of golf issue, they were a PGA Tour issue, all in an effort to get the call right.
    • Someone asked what I propose. I think if the bunker is full of rainwater, you get to drop it with no penalty directly in back of the bunker, so you still have a tricky shot of chipping over the bunker. People are talking about local committees and such which we just don’t have at our level. My league and playing partners gave the free drop with no issue. My original purpose of this post was just to understand what the “real” rule is, and I now know. But now I also want to encourage people to see that many long time golf rules are outdated and illogical, and hopefully encourage people to push for change. They made some changes in the last few years, so I’m hopeful the game I love will improve if enough people speak out. A lot to hope for posting in a little forum I know, but you have to start somewhere.
    • You get a penalty stroke because your local committee didn't do their job, they didn't address the specific conditions using the tools available to them within the Rules.  The rulemakers contemplated just this situation, bunkers being so filled with Temporary Water that they're unplayable.  The only way to address it "fairly" is to allow free relief outside the bunker, and they do NOT want to allow that on an everyday basis.  So they write the rules as it is, and allow the Committee to override the normal rule in the rare instance where the bunker really is full.  That's what your "local league" does, they invoke Model Local Rule F-16, which treats flooded bunkers as both GUR and as General Area.  Relief from GUR in the General Area allows relief in the General Area (i.e. outside the re-defined bunker).  Its quite a logical way to approach a relatively rare situation. Separately, consider your concern about temporary Water in the fairway.  I've seen situations in relatively level fairways where the Nearest Point of Complete Relief  from Temporary Water is 30 or 40 yards away, further from the green, even in the rough.
    • There you go, @yungbuck6. Your hips aren’t really shifted forward and your head tips back. The camera angle isn’t good so what looks like hip slide could actually just be extension towards the ball.
    • But there's more to weight shift than just where you finish. How your weight transfers throughout the swing matters too.  But you're saying you can see it better than a device that can measure it? Got it.  Yeah I'm good here, good luck to whoever tries to coach you.
